Lucy Powell MP, Labour’s Shadow Business and Consumers Minister, commenting on the news that beer sales plummeted 56% in 2020 said:
“Pubs are at the heart of our high streets, vital to many communities as places of work, and places to come together. The failure of the Government to back these businesses with adequate support to match the public health restrictions, means it could be last orders for many.
“Ministers must strain every sinew to ensure that hospitality and leisure businesses that have closed to keep us safe, are in turn safeguarded through the crisis. Labour is calling for a smart extension to the furlough scheme to protect jobs, for the 100% business rates holiday for hospitality, retail and leisure to be extended for at least six months, and for the continuation of the 5% VAT rate for the hospitality, tourism and culture sectors, to see pubs and other struggling businesses through lockdown, secure our economy and get Britain back on the road to recovery.”
