HOW DOES WELLBEING LINK INTO DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION?
Many Diversity and Inclusion policies direct their efforts towards objectively breaking down and assessing diversity based on their underrepresented characteristics. But how do we fully understand diversity and inclusion if we do not understand how people feel? How can we evaluate this? We link the ability to separate emotions from work to professionalism, yet we also expect people to be passionate and enthusiastic about our businesses? Why? If we as businesses cannot see our people in the right way, how can we expect them to perform in the way we want and need them to?
Wellbeing is about creating safe spaces for people to simply ‘be’ without judgement, stereotyping, and fear, and giving opportunities to develop and grow. With the current pandemic, we are all fighting to survive, but there is another silent pandemic of mental health that we need to recognise and support, particularly within underrepresented groups.
Well-being initiatives accommodate employee equity by identifying and addressing individual needs. An inclusive workplace enhances employee wellbeing. The NTIA wants to bring together real solutions and pathways for support not just by identifying what that looks like for individuals but also helping businesses learn how to reach out, manage, and support their people.
WHAT ARE THE CHALLENGES?
- Business owners NEED support to support and re-engage with their workforce.
- Many organisations doing many things – how can we work collaboratively to ensure advice, guidance and support can be reached?
- What are the key areas people need support in now: Financial, Family, and Future.
